I don’t eat salad stuff in the winter. It’s tasteless and pricey. Who really needs lettuce in January anyway?
Tomatoes are one of those things I only bother with in July and August — when they actually smell of something, and often have a dusting of pollen still — even at Safeway, where the organic article has now arrived at $1.99/lb. They don’t smell strong enough to be locally fresh — but good enough for the end of June.
So, I’m going to enjoy the first tomato sandwich of the season — with butter and lots of black pepper. There’s nothing that sets off a tomato better!
